We are pleased to announce the upcoming international summer school "Physics of Nuclear Open Quantum Systems," which will take place at GANIL, Caen, France, from July 6 to July 24, 2026.

 

The school will focus on modern theoretical approaches to study weakly bound and unbound quantum many-body systems. While examples will be primarily drawn from the physics of atomic nuclei, the theoretical concepts introduced are broadly applicable to all open quantum systems.

 

The school is intended for a broad audience of early-career scientists, including Master's and Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers, both theorists and experimentalists. Applications from exceptional senior undergraduate students will also be considered. The program will be of particular interest to those currently involved in or preparing to contribute to the physics initiatives at major rare-isotope facilities.

 

This three-week program will combine introductory lectures on the physics of open nuclear states with more advanced presentations on state-of-the-art theoretical frameworks and their applications to threshold phenomena important in nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. Lectures on experimental methods and detection techniques will also be featured.

 

The principal lecturers and organizers are Kevin Fossez (Florida State University, kfossez@fsu.edu), Witek Nazarewicz (Michigan State University, witek@frib.msu.edu), Marek Ploszajczak (GANIL,marek.ploszajczak@ganil.fr), and Alexander Volya (Florida State University, avolya@fsu.edu). Talks from experts in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics will complement the program.
