This year marks the 75th anniversary of the nuclear shell model, for which Maria Goeppert-Mayer and Hans Jensen won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963. In commemoration of this historic anniversary, Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago are proud to host a symposium from July 19 to 21, 2024, dedicated to celebrating the legacy and enduring impact of the nuclear shell model and Maria Goeppert-Mayer's contributions to science. The symposium will bring together researchers at all stages of their careers whose research descends from the development of the shell model. Topics presented will range from historical overviews of 75 years of progress to ongoing research at the forefront of nuclear physics. The symposium will include invited talks and contributed posters. The poster session is open to anyone, but we especially encourage students and postdocs to contribute a poster.
More details can be found on the symposium website (https://indico.phy.anl.gov/e/shell-model-75). Registration will open shortly.
Partial financial support is available for a limited number of early career researchers (students and postdocs). To request early career support, please submit a brief statement conveying interest in the symposium and level of support necessary for you to attend, your CV, and a letter (email) of support from your supervisor/advisor. Please email requests to the organizers at sm75@phy.anl.gov with subject line "Early career support: <your name>". The deadline to request financial support is May 31.
